Summary: As a DoD staffer, I challenged a politicized presumption that the invented, short-term, computationl substitute for the best experimental scientific work of the world, to that point, was inadequate to the mission. I was able to persuade DoD, the customer, that their critical nuclear weapons capability was at risk. As a result, joint DoD/DOE-NNAS reviews were conducted, program changes were made, and DoD became aware of the risks its mission was facing, when its only supplier of nuclear weapons technology would no longer be able to experimentally test nuclear explosive performance under actual performance conditions.
